Adult Attachment and Parenting Self-efficacy among Mothers with Preschoolers: The Mediation Effect of Mothers’ Play Participation Attitude and Moderation Effect of Preschoolers’ Negative Emotionality

|
The purpose of this study is to examine the mediation effect of play participation attitude on the relationship between adult attachment and parenting self-efficacy among mothers with preschoolers and the moderation effect of preschoolers’ negative emotionality on the relationship between mothers’ adult attachment and parenting self-efficacy. Three hundred and forty-five mothers participated in the study via an online survey. Descriptive statistics and Pearson’s product correlation coefficients were obtained, and tests of the mediation effects were performed by regression. Significant partial mediation effect of play participation attitude was found on the relationship between mothers’ adult attachment and parenting self-efficacy. Significant moderation effect of preschoolers’ negative emotionality was found on the relationship between mothers’ adult attachment and parenting self-efficacy. These findings indicate that positive change in mothers’ play participation attitude and mothers’ deeper understanding of their children’s negative emotionality enhance the levels of the parenting self-efficacy among mothers with insecure adult attachment.
